The best time to visit is the feeding time from 0930-1000 hrs and 1330-1400 hrs and the bathing time from 1000-1030 hrs and 1400-1430 hrs when all the elephants are taken to the river close by.

The zoo, which is close to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, extends 44 acres and has been landscaped without drawing attention away from its natural beauty. Since SriLanka is home to a diverse range of species, the zoo is divided into two sections: "Sri Lankan" and "World." However, the zoo now houses a variety of native animals, including deer, leopards, crocodiles, monkeys, birds, turtles, and many others.
